This is likely an Austrian made (possibly Italian) copy of a Jacobus Stainer 4/4 violin.

Based on construction and aging, my best guess is that this violin was made between 1880 and 1920. It has beautiful coloration and flame maple sides and back. There is a label inside which reads: “Jacobus Stainer in Absam…prope Oenipontum 16” The hand-written year following the 16 is too faded to see. The name “Stainer” is also carved into the top of the back board, with the word “Angle” written below that.

The two-part flame maple back is in excellent solid condition, with no crack or repairs. There is superficial blemish on the back. The sides are crack free. The top board has one well-repaired crack. The top, sides and bottom are held together tightly. The neck, peg box, and finger board are in great condition. The tailpiece has two newer fractional tuners. The chinrest is a Becker’s Model. The tuners are in good condition and the violin stays in tune. The sound post is in the right position. The tuners may not be original.

Measurements:

  • Back length: 14 1/8″
  • Upper bout: 6 1/2″
  • Lower bout: 8″
  • Scale: 12 3/4″
  • Overall length: 23 1/2″
  • Body depth (deepest part): 2 1/2″
