Antique 4/4 Nicola Amati Violin Copy – 18th/19th C., German, Restored, Playable

Up for sale is this wonderful copy of a Nicola Amati violin in 4/4 size. It features highly flamed maple ribs (sides) and back, with a spruce top, finished with its original golden varnish. The violin is set up and ready to play. The label inside the bass-side f-hole reads “Nicolaus Amatus fecit in Cremona 1641”.

Please watch the video to see and hear it played. The violin has a warm, deep, and impressive tone, and it is relatively lightweight in the hands.

The quality of this violin’s construction cannot be overstated. Inside the body, the ribs are neatly lined along the top and bottom edges, and the corner blocks are full and very tightly fitted.

Restorations include:

  • The scroll has been grafted. When we purchased the violin, the original scroll was missing; the graft was done using another 18th/19th-century neck. The graft joins between the D and A pegs. The rest of the neck is original.
  • Several cleated repairs to cracks in the back and top plates. All repairs are sound and stable.
  • Replacement fingerboard.
  • A small purfling repair on the treble side, just to the right of the upper portion of the f-hole.

Dimensions of note:

  • Nut size: 24.5mm
  • Scale length (nut to top of bridge): ~325mm / 12.75″
  • Back length: 14 3/16″
  • Overall length: 23 3/4″

Ships securely and safely. Reasonable offers considered.

Please inquire with any questions. The stand (shown in the pictures) and shoulder rest (seen in the video) are not included.

Violin and case only (no bow or shoulder rest). The case is in fair condition and is not lockable.
