Description
This is a Syrian 12-String Oud (Eastern Lute) from outside the Damascus region. It is all handmade and likely from the 1970s. The original label is inside the body, which I believe states that it is made by “Muhammad Essam Al-Zahir” and with a reference to Syria as well.
It has a 15-section bowl back and three sound holes. There are 16 rosettes surrounding the main sound hole. Each rosette is inlaid with various colored woods. The body of the oud is bound with an alternating-color / checkered pattern binding.
The neck is fretless (as are all ouds), and is constructed of inlaid geometrical patterns. The head is gently curved and has 12 wooden tuner pegs each with inlaid shell or bone dots at the ends.
It is in excellent condition overall. It does not have strings.
