Description
This is an unlabeled / unbranded American parlor guitar circa 1895 – 1915. It is stunning in person and in the pictures. This is likely from one of the many American guitar makers and luthiers in the Chicago area during the late 19th to early 20th century, similar to Lyon & Healy, Lakeside, etc.
This is a 24 1/4″ scale length guitar, with an overall neck / body length of 36 3/4″.
It features its original finish, with a solid, fan-braced, spruce top, and solid Brazilian rosewood back and sides. As seen in the pictures, it is beautifully bound on the top board with a multi-layer wood and abalone inlay alternating between circles and diamonds. The same binding technique adorns the sound hole as well. The back boards are joined with an intricate multi-wood inlay that runs from the top of the body to the bottom.
The neck has a strong v-shape, which is typical for the period. This gives it a very strong and straight neck profile. The fingerboard is bound and is inlaid with stars and circles. The top of the headstock is veneered in rosewood and inlaid with moons and stars, and what appears to be a bird. The back of the headstock is also veneered in rosewood. The back of the neck has several decorative floral carvings near the heal and close to under the nut.
The bindings, tuners, bridge, and frets appear to be original. The neck has been reset and there are some minor imperfections around the heel. The top board has several cracks which are repaired. There is also a repaired small crack on the bottom edge near the strap button. The 7th fret inlay appears to be not original. Other than that, it is in gorgeous condition for its age and it plays beautifully!
