1940s / 50s Kay Jumbo Flat Top Acoustic Guitar 17″ w/ Oval Sound Hole Rare

1940s / 50s Kay Jumbo Flat Top Acoustic Guitar 17″ w/ Oval Sound Hole Rare

This is an unusual and rare large jumbo flat-top acoustic guitar with a 17″ wide lower bout, from the 1940s to 1950s. This guitar was most likely made by Kay.

I am not sure exactly the age. The construction is consistent with guitars I’ve handled in that period. It has a solid spruce top and sunburst pattern on the back. It has a fairly long scale at 25 3/4″ with a nut size of 1 11/16″.

It is in played condition and overall is in good shape. Structurally, it is excellent and strong. There are two repaired cracks on the top board where there used to be pickguard screw holes. This is a common crack to occur due to screws being used that were too big.

The finish is rubbed and worn on the top board. The top board is solid spruce. The back board and sides are mahogany. The back has a very nice sunburst pattern.

The neck is relatively straight with only a slight curve upwards. This is common for its age and lack of truss rod.

The guitar has its original tuners, nut and bridge as far as I can tell. The bindings are in great shape. There is a small patch repair done to the bottom side of the lower bout (see pictures). There is some wear and scratches on the sides. The bridge was repaired at some point in the past, because you can see a little repair patch between the 3rd and 4th string.
