Description
Vintage 1980 – 1982 Hondo HD-794 “Fatboy” Hollow Body Archtop Electric Guitar
This is a gorgeous 1980-82 vintage Hondo HD-794 “Fatboy” hollow-body archtop in near mint condition. The “HD” model is the higher-end version of the standard H-794. The “D” in HD denotes the premium, factory-upgraded DiMarzio K-10 humbucker pickups which are 100% original and installed.
This is a big guitar in both physical presence and sound. It has a 17″ wide lower bout and 4″ deep body edge. T he build quality from this Samick-era collaboration is absolutely excellent. Hondo made this model to compete with iconic jazz boxes like Gibson’s L-5.
The set-in neck, with its stained nato fingerboard and pearloid block inlays, has a wonderful shape and feel. If I was playing this guitar and didn’t see the headstock, and someone told me I was playing a Gibson, I wouldn’t have second guessed it.
The guitar plays flawlessly, with smooth, easy low action and excellent, warm humbucking tone. Its overall condition is excellent to mint with only a few tiny marks in the finish. Everything on this instrument is all-original, from the individual chrome tuners and “stinger” headstock finish down to the floating adjustable bridge and trapeze tailpiece.
Inside the f-holes you will find the Hondo label and model number “HD-794”. There is a sticker on the back of the neck heel with “HD-794” written on it as well.
