Armadillo Back Charango Andean 6-String Instrument – Ukulele? 1930s

Armadillo Back Charango Andean 6-String Instrument – Ukulele? 1930s

This is a really unusual instrument. I believe it is an Andean charango, but I’m not 100% sure. It is about the size of a ukulele, but it isn’t one. The back of the instrument has an armadillo. The neck is fretless except for the carved in fret lines at the top. There are six tuning pegs. The two center strings are very close to each other as seen in the pictures.

It is in very good condition. There are minor chips at the top of the pegboard, and a few scratches on the back of the neck (see pictures). The armadillo is in remarkably good condition.

As far as the age is concerned, judging by the wood and the aging of the armadillo it appears to be from the 1930s.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
